During his time at Devon, Gene goes through a period of intense kinship with Finny. Because of his "accident", Finny learns that he will never again be able to compete in sports, which are most dear to him.
Gene wanders the campus until he falls asleep under the football stadium. The summer session ends, and Gene goes home to the South for a brief vacation.
When Gene protests that sports no longer seem important in the midst of the war, Finny declares that the war is nothing but a conspiracy to keep young men from eclipsing the older authorities. Phineas is a prophet, a boy so convinced in his own convictions that he can persuade anyone to not only do anything, but also believe in why they are doing it.
Knowles found a new subject and tone in Spreading Firesa gothic thriller set on the Riviera. Finny prods Gene into making a dangerous jump out of a tree into a river, and the two start a secret society based on this ritual.
Gene, afraid that Finny will be hurt by this remark, tries to raise his spirits by getting him to discuss his conspiracy theory again, but Finny now denies the war only ironically. Vidal states that Knowles told him that the character Brinker is based on Vidal.
One such inspired creation was to convince his friends to follow him onto a slender tree limb and use it as a springboard into the lake. A Separate Peace appeared in and quickly earned the praise of British reviewers.
During a meeting of the Golden Fleece Debating Society, Brinker sets up a show trial and, based upon his shaking of the branch, accuses Gene of trying to kill Finny. World War II is in full swing and the boys at Devon are all eager to enlist in the military. If so in this case, both characters are totally unaware of it.
With encouragement from Thornton Wilderhe concurrently began writing novels. Finny tells Gene that he once had aspirations to go to the Olympics, and Gene agrees to train for the Olympics in his place.
To join, one must take the plunge. Knowles has stated that he modeled Finny on David Hackett from Milton Academywhom he met when both attended a summer session at Phillips Exeter Academy.
The next day, Finny dies during the operation to set the bone when bone marrow enters his bloodstream during the surgery. Finny cites Lepellier as an unreachable witness.
Finny creates a rite of initiation by having members jump into the Devon River from a large, high tree. While at Yale, Knowles contributed stories to campus humor magazine The Yale Record  and served on the board of the Yale Daily News during his sophomore, junior and senior years, notably as editorial secretary during his senior year.
In the 40 years since its publication, the novel has become a classic for both young adults and adult readers. He was a record-holding varsity swimmer during his sophomore year. For a while he can even convince himself that the ongoing war is a hoax. His father was vice president of a coal company, earning an income which afforded them a comfortable living.
